PERSONALITY: Mariko is an exceedingly carefree individual, who enjoys life to the fullest. Having grown up in a very strict household, Mariko indulges and appreciates every freedom she has. Even something as simple as being able to choose her own classes or buy her own outfits gives her a bit of joy.

Being repressed for most of her young life, she is also very outgoing, refusing the role of the quiet, studious child that she had been forced into for so long. She's very social and friendly, introducing herself to other students and considering herself part of the welcoming committee for new students. She tries her best to avoid being obnoxious about it, but she's genuine in her friendliness. She enjoys group trips to the mall and clubs, as well as group field trips.

Due to having so many fights with her parents, sometimes Mariko can exhibit a bit of a sarcastic streak in her humor, possibly even passive-aggressive. It's not something that comes up often, but she's learned how to trade verbal barbs with nearly anyone, and is absolutely ready to call out someone if they need it, in the most snarky way possible. She keeps it at bay, though, and saves it only for situations where something needs to be said.

Her serious side steps up to the plate when the situation calls for it, as well - during training and on the occasional guided mission, she can show professionalism that is definitely a product of her upbringing. Rather than trade quips with her teammates, she's focused on the situation at hand. After all, she has aspirations to be an X-Man, and she'll do whatever she can to see a mission through as successfully as possible.

She has a sense of longing to her that only close friends can see. Due to her nature, she's often felt like an outcast, and wants to be accepted - by her friends, by society, even by her parents. She doesn't want to change who she is to achieve it, however, and admonishes against the concept of changing oneself to please others. She's a strong proponent for being yourself, and though that's gained her some admiration, sometimes it leaves her feeling a bit lonely.

Above all, though, she has a sense of loyalty that outshines her want for acceptance. She has found a family at the Xavier Institute, and treats them as such. Even the students and faculty she has disagreements with are still family, and she will protect them to her fullest, no matter their personal grievances. This even extends to her parents; even if she were to be disowned, she would still care about them, and see to their wellbeing if it's in her power.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Solar flames: Mariko's body absorbs sunlight, which she can then convert into superheated plasma which bursts into flames on contact with air. She can manipulate this plasma into fiery blasts, or can utilize it to propel and direct herself in flight.

Heat absorption: A side effect of her powers, Mariko's body can withstand extreme heat with no ill effects, and though it hasn't developed far enough, could even absorb low levels of radiation, in theory.

Heat vision: Mariko can focus her powers to allow her to see heat signatures via infrared, though this power has not developed yet.

AU HISTORY: Mariko was born into the wealthy Yashida family, a family known for its power in the business world. Her parents, though they loved her, were very strict with her, wanting her to live up to the high standards placed on their family, both by their past successes and by their public perception. As such, Mariko was without many childhood distractions, instead constantly surrounded by tutors of all kinds. While she excelled academically, she couldn't help but feel some tension towards her parents.

As she grew older, Mariko proved herself to be an amazing student, maintaining a constant 'A' average in school, and accruing skill at both the violin and piano that was impressive for her age. However, this chafed her further with her parents, as they had all but stated that, despite her achievements, they planned on her making an excellent wife and mother for someone else. Combined with a lack of much personal attention, Mariko kept much of her life and thoughts from her parents, including her feelings for others. In her adolescence, she began feeling strong emotions for her best friend and, getting the impression that they were mutual, attempted to start a relationship. She was not met with a positive response, and though her friend tried to keep quiet about the event, word spread enough that Mariko's parents confronted her. They maintained that pursuing such relationships was 'foolish and immature,' and that some day she would see that they were right. This drove a wedge further between her and her parents.

On her 15th birthday, Mariko's mutant power first manifested. While the prospect excited her, she was met with hostility on her parents' part, who saw it as a great shame to their family, and refused to let her explore her newfound gift. This led to a drawn-out argument, and was the final straw in driving Mariko away. When her parents were at work, Mariko snuck home from school, packed her things, and left home for good. She emptied what personal funds she had, and bought passage on a ship headed for the United States, where she'd heard that there were places mutants could be free.

She had only been in America for a few weeks when she was sought out by a representative of the Xavier Institute. Her activities in the States caught their attention, and they offered her a chance to tour the school and see if she'd like to try it out. With few better options on the table, she agreed, and was flown to a meeting with Professor Xavier. He talked at length about how the school was a safe haven for all those different and persecuted, and how he could help Mariko learn to harness her powers and find her place in this changing world. The girl was somewhat dismissive at first, and so Xavier introduced her to the faculty, all mutants who had gained more control and understanding of their powers thanks to the help of Xavier and others.

It didn't take long for Mariko to agree to enrollment, and true to the hype, the Institute has been a wonderful home for her, free of any of the problems she had with her parents, and allowing her to figure out who she is and where she fits in. Since finishing her first year at the school, she's claimed it as her new home, and hopes, one day, that she might even join the ranks of the X-Men.

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE:Despite the strained relationship with her parents, and the bad taste left in her mouth regarding her childhood, she couldn't shake everything that she'd learned. Nor, really, did she want to. Music, she still had a passion for. Her violin was one of the few things she still had from home; after all, in a worst-case scenario, she could have pawned it for money. But she didn't have to, and she came to realize that she would've been heartbroken if she had.

Retrieving it from the case under her bed, she took it with her as she left the dorm building, finding a good spot on the grounds. She wasn't seeking attention, but people seemed to like her playing, and she in turn liked playing for people. Finding an out-of-the-way spot so her music didn't disturb anyone, she set about tuning the instrument, plucking and drawing over the strings until their sound was perfect. She then put herself in a comfortable position, and started producing some slow, melodic notes.

It was a classical piece, and one she'd practiced since childhood. It was kind of like a warm-up to her, getting herself straightened out. It was simple, soft, and definitely not a crowd draw. A few students stopped to watch, but continued on after a moment or two. Which was fine; again, she was just getting out the kinks.

After she was done, there was a smattering of applause, but she simply put bow to string again.

And this time, she cut loose.

Her hand moved like a blur, pulling out striking notes with a rapid tempo. She abandoned the classics she'd played in her younger years, electing to play out an encompassing, upbeat, jazzy piece.

After all, her parents would hate that.

She closed her eyes and smiled, moving with her own music, swaying with the slower interludes, jerking with the rapid-fire moments, and even spinning a bit when a run came up. She was in her own world now, aware that she had gathered an audience, but within her own mind. As the notes came, so too did she see splashes of color in her mind's eye, flames licking in time with the music, dancing with each other behind her eyelids.

As she rose to crescendo, the flames she saw exploded brilliantly, and she heard cheers from those that had gathered... only to open her eyes and see them down below, as she hovered above them, supported by a jet of flame she didn't know she had produced. Sheepishly, she lowered herself to the ground with a bow.
